30 Day Tarot Challenge - Week 2 - Sept 6-12, 2020 - The Spacious Tarot

Today begins week 2 of our 30 Day Tarot Challenge for September 2020. Throughout this challenge, I will be using the delightful second edition of  The Spacious Tarot. I love its concept of putting the reader into the images by drawing the traditional Rider-Waite concepts in unexpected ways. This has a tendency to bring out new insights, which is another thing I love about this deck.

September 6-12, 2020

Day 6 - September 6, 2020
Question - Something I will encounter today

Elder (King)  of Pentacles reversed

foundation card - 4 of Swords reversed

The Spacious Tarot

This may not apply to something that happens today - I’ll see as the day progresses. I think these cards showed up because of a situation very much on my mind.

I ministered a wedding yesterday with far more people than I had expected. I learned at the rehearsal the night before of the large number of people coming and, on the wedding day, none of the guests were wearing masks. I was concerned for the safety of all those attending and for myself and what I might bring home to my family.

I called my family last night to let them know what happened and to ask if they would feel safe for me to come back to help them with online schooling this coming week. Although I did my best to stay safe within the large group of people at the wedding, I felt I owed it to the family to let them know what happened so they could address their feelings about it.

The three main ways I read reversed cards are for them to mean something going on in a person’s inner world or for the energies of the card to have already happened in the situation being asked about. Occasionally, they can also describe the opposite of their upright meanings. I can see the first meanings at work here, which is why I feel the cards probably refer to my conversation with my family last night.

Elder (King) of Pentacles rev - Pentacles refer to health, home, family, career. This Elder (King) is the protector of the family. My desire to protect the family was my motivation for calling them. Concerns about my possible exposure to the virus and potentially spreading it to the family were primary in my heart and mind. This card reversed says I am feeling those protective feelings strongly on the inner. Very true.

4 of Swords rev - Upright, this card can represent illness or a need to withdraw for some quiet, restorative time. Reversed, it can mean that someone is thinking about a need for a physical withdrawal or that the withdrawal time has come to an end. I was definitely thinking I should self-quarantine. The end result of our family call was that, because the wedding was outside and I had taken steps to protect myself around the people, there is a lower chance of my being infected and no need to self-quarantine. They all agreed it would be safe for me to be around them this coming week, unless, of course, I develop symptoms. I think this card being reversed today reflects the assumption of minimal danger. I hope we are right.

Day 7 - September 7, 2020
Question - Something going on inside me I need to look at

4 of Pentacles reversed - The Spacious Tarot

What an interesting card to pull today. Yesterday I finished the updates on my professional website and blog about my coming retirement in early Nov. Although I was glad to get that project finished in the time frame I had in mind, having it now publicly official brought out feelings of concern for my financial future. Once I am no longer working, outside income is going to stop and I will become a person in a fixed retirement income. It is odd that this feels scary and vaguely ominous. I have known there will be restrictions. Have I been subconsciously worried about it? We are not rich but we are not in trouble financially.

I have been working so much of my life that retirement is going to be a new thing to wrap my mind around. I have recently been wondering what I am going to do with myself with so many hours a day to fill and no outside responsibilities to meet. I have never had those kinds of thoughts before.

4 of Pentacles reversed

So what does this card say about this? Pinecones are an inspired analogy of this card’s upright meaning in both the RWS (money-resources)  and Thoth (power-security)  traditions. Both indicate holding on to resources and power. There is a desire to keep all you can to feel safe. I can see that at play in my thoughts. I had hoped to build a little financial safety net this year, before retiring, but the virus slowdown left only a small income trickle and I was not able to do that. My tendency is to hold on to all I can to help make what we have go further.

The pinecone holds its seeds tightly within its layers. It is not until it opens that new life begins. This card, being reversed, shows a need for me to release my grip of fear and worry. The pinecones will soon be ready to open and spread their seeds around, creating new life and abundance. Nature always provides seeds of life and perpetuation.

The Message of the Pinecones

Funny how I wasn’t even consciously aware I was having these worries. I was surprised that I felt prompted to ask the question I did today. Something inside me must have known this message was important for me to hear.

I think today’s message of this card is that I don’t need to worry about the future. As in Nature, everything we need is going to come to us as we need it. Finances and activities will come, providing their own abundance. Retirement will bring new vistas and opportunities. I should embrace them, honor them, enjoy them. They are gifts seeded to the future from The Universe.

Day 8 - September 8, 2020
Question - A good message for today

2 of Pentacles - The Spacious Tarot

Oh yes, I know what this card means for today. I chuckled when I saw it. I head back to online schooling with the kids tomorrow and have a lot of foods I want to get prepared in the kitchen before I do. I have been thinking how I can best plan the day so I can accommodate all the various timings for each project, and I want to make sure I get my walk in, too. Juggling times and projects is going to be the theme of the day, for sure.

There are 2 hummingbirds in the image. My mom loved hummingbirds and whenever I see them, I think of her. Wonder if she is going to come to mind today as I work or walk. Maybe some hummingbirds might even make an appearance. Wouldn’t that be nice.

UPDATE - How a hummingbird showed up... I didn’t see one myself, but this evening I turned on a youtube Tarot video and the reader mentioned he had a hummingbird right outside his window. Mom let me know she was with me today in a very unexpected way. Love that.

Day 9 - September 9, 2020
Question - Something I should be aware of today

Mother Tarot - Magician reversed - The Spacious Tarot

The Magician reversed - The Spacious Tarot

Heading back to online school today. We have named Wednesdays, ‘Wacky Wednesday,’ because it’s a day we do after-school things with a different perspective, like reading a book while being upside down or reading aloud with a funny voice. When I drew this card, I had a few ideas for whacky things to do but hadn’t yet decided which to use.

The Mobius strip of the infinity symbol stood out to me. That was in my card yesterday, too, but today it makes me think of M.C Escher’s work. Well I’ll be. There’s the Wacky Wednesday activity for today! I’ll take my Escher book with me and let the kids have fun following the lines in his art to see how they move impossibly through the pictures. Then we’ll make a Mobius strip. Thanks, Magician!

UPDATE - The kids LOVED Escher’s work and making our own Mobius strips. 😊

Day 10 - September 10, 2020
Question - A message for today

The Wheel of Fortune - The Spacious Tarot

I didn’t really have a question but, as I was asking for today’s message, I felt the energies inside myself swirling around in a spiral. Lo and behold, a spiral shows up. When I look at this image, the spiral seems to be pulsing in and out at the center, like breathing. Seeing the seasonal items of nature swirling around it, the message comes that online schooling is going to run the full school year.

This image also reminds me of the ancient symbol of Life (and the sun). A circle with a dot at the center, it shows that Spirit (the dot)  resides at the core and all of Life (the circle)  moves around it, reflecting it and being sustained by it.

Today’s Messages

Online schooling is going to last the whole school year, as long as the virus is raging. It is a protection of the children and the school staffs. Spirit is looking after us all.

Not at all the kind of message I expected,
but what a reassuring and life-affirming message it is.

Day 11 - September 11, 2020
Will the weather hold for our granddaughter’s 6th birthday party tomorrow night?
A September 11 message

3 of Wands - The Spacious Tarot

The family party is to be outside (for distancing)  and start in the evening, after the heat and most of the bugs are gone. We’ve been watching the rain forecast for days and yesterday it started to look more promising.

My daughter has all kinds of glowing things for decorating the yard and for the kids to play games with in the dark. These glowing wands are reflecting that. A very good sign.
This looks like a ‘yes’ for the party.

UPDATE - 9-13-20 - Yes, the party went on as planned. The weather was perfect and the glowing party favors my daughter had planned were a huge hit. It was a fun evening.

Looking at the Card in Another Light - September 11

Today’s Challenge prompt was to notice the colors in the card and what they mean to me. With today being the somber anniversary of the September 11 attacks, what I saw in this card for the prompt is apropos for that terrible day and for the current fires and unrest in our nation.

Purples = spirit
Oranges, Yellows = flames, energy, Life
Black = night

We are being looked after by Spirit, even in the darkness.
The torches will light our way.

Day 12 - September 12, 2020
Question - Something I will encounter today

The High Priestess - The Spacious Tarot

I so love this card image. It is an amazing take on the traditional High Priestess meanings. For me, it brings to mind the idea of ‘worlds within worlds’ - and the Morton Salt girl. An odd pairing, I know.

When I was young, I would immerse myself in thoughts of altered perspectives. The Morton Salt girl was one of those. She carries a tube of Morton salt with her image on it, carrying a tube of salt with her image on it, and so on and so on, going into infinity. I was fascinated by that concept, even as a little girl.

Morton Salt logo, 1956, when I was a child

This High Priestess’ moon within a shell on the seashore speaks to me of similar ideas. I see The High Priestess as the spiritual-energetic matrix behind all of materiality. She knows how and where everything fits together. She knows all the secrets. In the RWS image, she sits in front of a veil with patterned hints of what lies behind that veil. In the Thoth image, she vibrates situations and matter into being. She is powerful and eternal. The truth hides in plain sight, just as the moon in this image glows within the darkness of the shell.

So how will any of this come into play today? I can’t wait to find out!

How the High Priestess Moon Showed up Today

There has been something going on with a granddaughter not doing all her school work. This is not like her and it is causing a lot of concern. An explanation emerged today and there is a simple, logical solution. Thank goodness.

Weight Loss Tarot Journal - 10 Pounds Lost! - Ace of Swords - The Druidcraft Tarot

September 3, 2020
Weight Loss Tarot Journal
~ One month on this plan and 10 pounds down! ~
Ace of Swords
Deck - The Druidcraft Tarot
I feel like this card. Excaliber was given to me in the form of a new eating plan to cut out flour and sugar. And I have run with it. Three months ago, I discovered Bright Line Eating, a sensible, logical and practical eating plan that had the same goals I did; to cut out sugar and flour. I liked that they had a road map and hand-holding support to get me started and moving along safely.
One month ago, I started on the plan. It has turned out to be much easier to give up my two most powerful trigger foods than I expected. That was a nice surprise. I have had to tweak food volumes down a bit for me, but it has been a huge relief to find I have had no sugar cravings and no slips. It has been easy to stay on the plan, even in the midst of a newly-changed and super busy schedule.
Two days before finishing my first month, I hi…

Weight Loss Tarot Journal - Psychic Tarot for the Heart - 5 of Swords - The Fool

November 8, 2019
Give me a message for today
Card Drawn  -  5 of Swords reversed Foundation Card  -  The Fool

Deck  -  Psychic Tarot for the Heart
When I got on the scale this morning, my weight had gone up a pound and I had lost most of the small progress (1.3 lbs) made so far. Disappointing!  There is a valid reason we are often cautioned not to get on the scale daily - the disappointment can knock us off our plan. I know this and try to guard against that emotional roller coaster. But for me, the daily morning scale ritual also helps me to know how the foods I ate yesterday affect my body today. Analyzing those fluctuations helps me gather information and - being a Gemini - that is an important part of the weight loss learning curve for me. Even knowing all that, though, it is still disappointing to see the weight go up and not down.

The messages in the cards todayaddress all of this.

Weight Loss Tarot Journal - A Weight Loss Plateau Brings a Surprising Revelation - The Hanged Man - 4 of Swords - Queen of Pentacles - Light Seer’s Tarot

August 10, 2020
Weight Loss Tarot Journal
What has caused my weight loss stall?
The Hanged Man
Foundation Cards - 4 of Swords + Queen of Pentacles
Deck used - Light Seer’s Tarot
Well, doesn’t Tarot have a sense of humor today. I chuckled when I saw The Hanged Man. How appropriate. My 5 pound weight loss last week was wonderful and unexpected but, for the last 3 days, the weight has just been sitting there. I know plateaus happen on a weight loss journey but I didn’t expect one so soon. Am I doing something wrong? I tried thinking what I might have done to cause this but, other than a couple ideas that don’t seem pertinent, I haven’t come up with anything. So I asked the cards to plumb my subconscious for an answer. The Hanged Man shows a stalling, yes, but it also represents coming to a new perspective. What might that perspective be?
The Foundation Cards - 4 of Swords + Queen of Pentacles - both indicate this is a natural process and a time for heali…

On the Passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg - Tender Embrace - Oracle of the 7 Energies

September 19, 2020
Processing the loss of beloved Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
deck used -Oracle of the 7 Energies
I am feeling double gut-punched at last night’s loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and what is coming politically as a result. The vultures are circling.
I chose this deck today because it taps into healing energies, something much needed here in the USA. Tender Embrace references love and compassion for others, making sure not to forget that for ourselves as well. Justice Ginsburg‘s arena was the legal system and within it she chose a personal path of empathy, care and compassion for her fellow man. Because of her commitment to leveling the playing field for all of us, she left a powerful wake of reverberating effects in our nation. She made a huge, positive difference in our lives.
I see in this card the best way to honor her will be to hug ourselves and each other, recognize our connections, and then pick up her gauntle…

The Earth Element in Tarot - Pentacles - Pages - Major Arcana - with Tarot Grand Luxe

It is now autumn in the northern hemisphere and I have been thinking about the seasons and the elements. To me, autumn equates with the earth element and in the Tarot, the earth element is usually represented by the Pentacles (sometimes called coins). The Pages of each Tarot suit and five of the Major Arcana cards  also reflect the earth element energies. I have chosen to use the Tarot Grand Luxe deck by Ciro Marchetti for this post  because its rich and vibrant colors match the glorious tones of autumn.

My First Reading with The Spacious Tarot - Ace of Cups - Child (Page) of Pentacles

August 27, 2020
How my helping with my family’s online schooling will go.
Ace of Cups
foundation card - Child (Page) of Pentacles
deck - The Spacious Tarot
This very special deck arrived today. When I got a chance to sit down with it, welcoming it to the family, looking at all the cards, I was immediately smitten. I love the clean, modern, nature-based images that carry such an amazing depth within their simplicity. The first reading I did with it got right to the point and each question that followed let me know I will be able to use this deck for any kind of question, even political ones.
My first question was about how helping my daughters with their children’s online schooling was going to go. The answer was perfect and succinct.
Ace of Cups My cup runneth over! I love that I am getting to spend so much time with them. I am grateful that my quarantine-slowed work schedule is allowing this time for us. I am happy that I can contribute to helping th…
